When you hear “braces,” you probably think of those metal brackets and wires across the front of your teeth. But did you know that there are different types of braces for teeth? There are different types of metal braces, as well as ceramic braces. There are braces you can see easily, and some you can barely see at all!

Fergus Orthodontics offers different braces because we know our patients are different. Some people are okay with traditional metal braces. Others prefer clear braces or lingual braces that are harder to see. What types of braces are there, and which type is right for you?

Why Are There Different Types of Braces?

Traditional metal braces date back to ancient Egypt, where mummies were found with wire and metal plates on their teeth. Today’s braces are smaller and more efficient than those from even a few decades ago. They even come in different types.

Each braces type has similar traits to the original metal braces, but they are made of different materials or worn differently. All braces have the same goal—to move your teeth to their correct positions, repair your bite, and give you a smile you can proudly show off.

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces today aren’t the same as what your parents might have worn. Today’s metal braces are smaller and more efficient than ever, thanks to technological advances that help orthodontists perfectly place the metal brackets on your teeth.

More efficient brackets and placement mean you may only wear braces for 12-24 months instead of 3-4 years as your parents did. The stainless steel brackets and bands are also more comfortable than older braces. Professional orthodontists and their patients have relied on this tried-and-true method for years.

Here are the advantages of traditional metal braces:

  • A tried-and-true method to straighten teeth
  • Often less expensive than other types of braces or clear aligners
  • Can correct even the most severe dental issues
  • Not removable, so they will be worn all the time and can’t be lost like clear aligners
  • Durable stainless steel won’t stain or discolor

Clear Ceramic Braces

In the 1980s, patients got an alternative to metal braces. A new type of braces used ceramic brackets instead of metal ones. These brackets were an off-white color, so they were closer to the color of teeth. They were called clear braces.

Clear braces today can be more closely matched to your natural tooth color, making them much harder to see on the teeth. They are popular with patients who don’t want their braces front and center, as it were. They are a popular type of braces for adults who want their dental appliances to be less visible than metal braces.

Clear braces also offer a little more comfort, thanks to the smooth, rounded edges of the ceramic brackets. Unlike clear aligners, clear braces can work with even the most severe dental cases.

Let’s check out the advantages of clear braces:

  • More comfortable, rounded ceramic brackets
  • Ceramic material can be customized to closely match your natural tooth color
  • Can work with even severe cases
  • Stain resistant despite lighter material
  • Lower profile makes them popular with adult patients

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are metal braces that are nearly invisible in your mouth. How is that possible? The metal brackets are placed on the back side or inside of the teeth, also known as the tongue side. Hence the name “lingual” braces!

Lingual braces such as Incognito Braces are customized to the shape of your teeth so they don’t show. Unless you yawn very wide, there is a good chance people won’t know that you’re wearing braces!

Lingual braces work with most orthodontic issues, though they may not work well for those with a deep bite. Lingual braces are also more expensive than traditional metal braces and can sometimes be more uncomfortable. However, they have advantages.

  • Virtually invisible braces
  • Great for most dental issues
  • Good for adults who prefer the invisibility
  • Good for teens who are self-conscious about regular braces

Clear Aligners

Braces are the most common way to move teeth, but there is another popular method — clear aligners. Invisalign clear aligners and other types move teeth using clear, customizable trays. These trays come in sets for upper teeth and lower teeth. The sets of trays are worn in sequence, moving the teeth into place.

Clear aligners are removable, so there are no food restrictions. However, clear aligners can be lost or damaged when not in your mouth. They also aren’t best with the most severe dental cases. Your orthodontist will need to decide whether clear aligners are right for you.

Clear aligners have some advantages.

  • Custom-designed for your teeth for more comfort
  • Removable for eating and brushing teeth
  • Quick treatment, usually in 9-15 months
